In days past, sailing down to the Los Coronados for a quiet nite on the hook made for a nice overnite trip out of SD. But things have gotten so crazy in Mexico, I hesitate going down there anymore.

Does anyone go down anymore?

Thanks. Bob

We have not ventured out overnight beyond overnight races so I can't speak personally , but our dock neighbors do and have done that multiple times. I believe that alot of the small boat fisherman near us do the same....... Have not heard of any problems.

why would the insanity in mexico interfere with the islands on the sea?? the mexican drug runners do not go there--they usually remain where they can do their deeds. if you are not involved in the drug trade
if you are not involved with the mexican mafia
if you are a pure tourista and pay attention to the rules ,
if you are not a drug seeker--( prescription or non)(you MUST have prescriptions for your meds you buy in mexico)
you WILL have a lovely time in mexico. the mexican authorities protect the touristas as much as possible in t he tourista towns.
i watched as bandidos who stole from usa touristas were displayed thru san felipe with a bull horn announcing to the residents exactly what the 3 did--was awesome to watch----
donot drive at night
do not drive solo
do not purchase drugs/drogas
do not loiter in border towns--juarez seems to be the worst at present--they vary.

the usa media hype has made this war between the policia and the mafia into a huge reason not to travel--if you fall into that , then you are a victim of programming and shouldnt be traveling anywhere, as you might possibly fall off th train as it leaves the station. or maybe you might fall out of an airplane on its way over phoenix. as a tourista in mexico , you have that enormous chance of being hit by a stray bullet--while on a boat on an island 4 hours away from anywhere with out inhabitants?? get real, folks--this is reality, not television. big difference..please use caution and have a good time. folks do not disembark in the mexican islands of coronado. they are a place to anchor and read a book. if you fish,, you MUST first obtain a mexican fishing license. and , yes,, you MUST clear customs in san diego after your trip---the coronados are in the middle of smugglers alley--as they have been for centuries..LOL...the mexican navy will board you in the coronados, as they have for decades--(there is a navy base there), and you will NOT have on board any fishing gear--you will be considered a poacher--they take that seriously--even put 4 members of their own marine corps into prison for it a few years ago--

BE SAFE, BE SMART AND HAVE FUN.

Haven't sailed down there from the U.S., but we do have a small beach house in Ensenada that we drive to a lot. We haven't had any problems other than the check points by the Mexican Military on the highway makes the trip a bit longer....(3 of them between the border and Ensenada).

The further south of the border you go, the better off you are. Most of the problems have occured within 10 miles of there.

Thanks, ff. Sorry zeehag for the bad spelling. Latitude publishes their whole magazine online, too. There have been a number of letters to the editor about "safety in Mexico" in the last four or five issues, in addition to 'lectonic Latitude's coverage of the Harker story.

i have been subscriber for years!! i love the mag--is an excellent source of info in many areas...

there was a movement a few yrs ago demanding the boaters going to coronados have to stop at the cop docks each time going to coronados....is an attempt to crurb influx of illegals..LOL....but it also means boaters are more prone to boardings and approaches in the dark of nite by the homeless insecurity boys--in dark grey boats without identification on them in some cases--as reported by a u s army retired major---0300--quiet and dark--so be aware and be safe--but there is no problem in mexioco for those of us without mexican mafia connections or arms in drug running-that is where the violence is .....just be safe and wise and all is good. DO make sure you have fishing license for mexico if you plan on bringing any fishing gear whatsoever--they take their poaching seriously--is a major source of income for the natives--make sure BEFORE GOING , TO GET ONE. is 49 dollars per year--per person amnd no longer need one for eht boats..just for crew and people who are on board for fishing
all adults NEED fishing licenses ...... even if all you have on b oard is a kiddy pole--the intention is to fish--therefore, must have license. can lose boat and freedom for a number of years for non compliance. is very very important.
the place to find fishing license on line is conapesca---make sure you do this longer than 6 mos in advance--the only usa office is in san diego downtown--by online they mean, order the form online, fill it out and send in via snail mail--takes about 6 months unless you go to the conapesca office. then is 5 min..LOL...
go have fun and then post pix!!!!!

stu--bad spelling?? doesnt bother me unless isnt a typo lol....i think was how linky is set up by lat 38! is all good--.

No worries. I've got your back ;)

It wasn't bad spelling but what's referred to in the computing profession as fatfingeritis. There's no known cure.

Thanks for the link.
