I'm renting a 22' from Harbor Island Yatch Club in San Diego for a day sail in April. Any suggestions? Sites, beaches, restuarants? What type of winds can I expect? It'll be just me and a woman freind. Thanks!

Coronado
We have rented from Harbor Island Yacht Club and found them to be pretty good. We also had our bot there for a year. Going on memory the winds in the harbor are normally fairly mild but sufficient, say 5-10 knots. When we had our boat there we found that guests enjoyed the sail over to Coronado. There is a dock with several slips intended for transients that want to tie up for lunch. I forget the name of the outdoor plaza where the dock is but its the same one that the the San Diego / Coronado ferry uses. It is about half way between the Coronado Bay bridge and the aircraft carrier quays on Coronado. Sail to the dock, have lunch, continue south to the bridge or just south of it, up past the ball park, the naval ship repair, Seaport Village and the Midway aircraft carrier museum then back to HIYC. Along the way you'll likely see seals and possibly Navy Seals, old America's cup yachts now providing tours, the beautiful SD skyline. It's a real pleasant day.

Peohe's is the name...
Of the restaurant with a pier to tie up. I haven't been there but it looks nice. The ferry also lands there as well as the bay water taxis. Winds are as Bill mentioned. But watch yourself around the bridge. The winds are very fluky there. Constantly changing in speed and direction. I sail in the south bay mostly, only because it is once in a blue moon that the winds are favorable for me to pass under the bridge. South Bay sailing is, IMHO, nicer than North Bay. Winds are very steady with very little land mass of the island to block the flow. I think you'll enjoy sailing in the bay. Just be familiar with your charts. There are some restricted areas. Navy Seals on their gun boats are always patrolling around. If you see any Navy vessels, give it/them a wide berth. Enjoy.

Important things first To the east, just north of the cruise ship "B" Street pier is Ruth's Chris Steak house, fabulous for carnivores, $$$$, and ask for the patio if you can suffer a nearby cigar or cigarette, for a great view of the Bay. Right across the street and on the bay is Anthony's. I haven't been, but you can dock your boat on their private dock while eating- romantic Harbor Island is just south of the airport, follow the signs The wind really calms down as the sun is setting, so don't be far away from Harbor Island, or you are going real slow back. Best wind 11am to 4 pm. Little gusts, but you won't scare yourself or family on the bay. Wind comes out of the north by northwest, so you're beating back to your slip from just about anywhere you go. Stay at least 100 yards from the navy base across the bay to the south. Nineteen year old steroid injecting horny sailors with finger on 50 caliber machine guns in roaming boats. No deaths yet. If you go out of the harbor, ? rental policy?, shoals to the left and kelp to the right for 2-3 miles. This is based on 3 visits, hopefully the locals will chime in for you and correct anything i got wrong.

Check out "Humphreys on/by the Bay"...great place on one of the islands sticking out in what I guess they are calling North Bay. We chartered a 37 ft. Hunter years ago, sailed out several miles into the Pacific to follow some whales around, then came back in to hear some fabulous music.

Hello DC, I am sure that you will have a great time sailing in the San Diego Bay,its always pretty nice. Like one of the posters said wind comes up about 11:00 AM, starts shuting down about 4:00 P.M., Just in time for cocktails at the dock. I think that the dock at Peohe's may be still closed for repairs, I will check this weekend when I am out sailing,(man I hope its not to hot out, 75 Degs. today

The dock in front of Peohe's Restaurant is currently closed. One of the sights my guests enjoy in SD Bay are the bait docks near Ballast Point to the west of the channel. They are home to a large number of seals and lots of sea birds. Sail slowly past about 5'-10' off the docks and you are certain to have the large bulls warning you to stay away from their harem. They stink but are fun to see.

Thanks for all the info. Jen and I will be in SD for an athletic directors conference at tht Town & Country Resort and we have one day to play, so we're sailing. Great location
Town & Country is just across the San Diego river from Fashion Valley Mall, a fabulous mall, my wife likes it better than Horton Plaza downtown. The side road on the west side of Town & Country is Fashion Valley Lane. About a 1/2 mile walk across the bridge to the north, away from the freeway out front of the hotel. Just as you get to the mall you will see the Fashion Valley Transit Center. You can take the Green line to anywhere in downtown San Diego. see link Two of our favorite restaurants are on the northeast corner of the mall. PF Changs- get the chicken lettuce wraps as an appetizer, and the Cheesecake Factory. There is a Pizzaria Uno and a movie theater. Enjoy!

Winds can be puffy in april/may. It'll most likely be a land breeze that will start abt 11am and quit about 4pm. Weather should be great. For eats: Buon Appetito in Little Italy, afterward walk down to the Waterfront Bar, Rockys in PB(great burger), check out Winevaultbistro.com, Los Cuatro Milpas(spelling?) for lunch (on Logan St.), also "C-Level" on Harbor Island. Also do the Torrey Pines loop hike up from beach toward TP golf course. Great ocean views. Check out a Padres game downtown. Have fun. Bob
