front of engine as well as negative distribution posts and external voltage regulator. I had a leak from the raw water pump causing salt water to be forced upward by the fan belts and make a salty mess. Now, how do I clean up the alternator and other electrical connections that were hit by the salt water? I tried to wipe down what I could using fresh water. Should I spray with contact cleaner or CRC or Boehsield? Hope this doesn't cause too many problems.

ITWMB, I'd remove the alternator and either immerse it in fresh water immediately (probably too late for that) or take it to an alternator shop.

I'd also remove the regulator from the engine compartment. Heat is NOT good for them.

Hope this doesn't cause too many problems.
It will, sorry.

Good luck.

For this kind of thing I use Salt-X, which is really good for dissolving and washing away salt deposits. It's used by the Navy and USMC on dive gear, outboards, etc.

Its important to check how much salt water got into things - is mostly on the surface, or is it as if the items were immersed?

Take the time now to really clean all surfaces contaminated with salt water. Or boat came with a new raw water pump after the old one failed and sprayed the engine. The surface corrosion was extensive. In fact, when I changed an injector this spring, I replaced the steel return line and injector lines because the bottom of the lines were badly pitted as were all the zinc plater fasteners and other painted parts. Mechanic said that was due to the under side of lines not getting paint when Yanmar blows their paint on the engine after it’s assembled. Worked my was through it, removing parts, cleaning, sandblasting, priming and painting.

Edit: I also think the boat ran for part of a season that way based on a “high water” mark below the engine in the sump area. So hot salt spray really did a number.

Thanks all for your replies. I sprayed all salted areas with distilled water, let sit, then wiped down. So far, looks ok. Time will tell.
