I have heat damaage to my salon table from hot food on a paper plate. The table turned white under the plate. Any ideas how to fix the problem!

Don't sand it, not very much anyway.

I had some nasty water stains on mine. I sanded it and shortly the top layer was getting pretty thin, so I quickly stopped. I then applied a number of coats of teak oil. It looks ok now, but not as good as before the water stain. Obviously. I also would like to hear what others have done to their table.

Hi Rbuchen, the white discoloration you...

reference is most likely damage to the table's finish coat. I would contact Hunter Marine to find out what they used, but it is probably lacquer based, a very durable plastic coating. It is an easy repair. If it is lacquer you will need to sand the finish until you get below the discoloration, which may mean bare wood. You can get lacquer in a spray can from most home improvement stores, like Home Depot. Prepare the surface around the sanded area by using a furniture cleaner to remove any waxes, oils, dirt, etc. Then spray on several light coats (seven to ten) of lacquer on and around the damaged spot. Lacquer is fast drying as long as the environment is dry and warm. Check the surface for nibs (specks of dust) before applying succeeding coats. If you feel any use a 320 grit sandpaper to remove them before the next coat. I think you will be pleased with the outcome. Terry

Hunter finish

The same thing happened to our table shortly after we got our 2003 356. At the Miami boat show, I talked to Hunter rep and he showed me a can of "spay finish" that is shipped with each boatfor touching up. When I got home, my dealer gave me a can and I just sprayed it on the white spot! No work at all and it was fixed! Do not sand, just spay on. Works for other small blemishes also. You do need good ventilation.

white stain cure

Another fix that's been used for a long time for this kind of heat/water damage is to cover the spot with mayonaise (yes, real mayo!) and let it sit for 1/2-1 hour, then rub off. if any of the mark remains, repeat.

Lacquer is a solvent based finish that can be renewed with thinner, unlike poly which once cured is set for life. This is the same with shellac, but shellac dissolves with any alcohol.
