I had the same problem on our 1992, 35.5. I first got it moving by trying to twist it on the post. Once we had gotten it moving around the compression post we started to inch it up and down until we finally had it to the point that it would move on the post with some white lube.
We eventually modified the table and supports using the instruction on the 35.5 owners mods.
