Sales contract for sailboat

Help! Does anyone have a sample sales contract for a sailboat. I want to sale a 1987 sailboat and need an example to work with without going through a broker. In the area I live the minimum brokerage fee is 2,500USD which doesn't make sense considering the value of a smaller sailboat. I have seen very basic contracts , but I am looking for something more comprehensive that covers down payment commitments, surveys, sea trials, haulouts etc. PLEASE HELP. Thanks, Bob

That would be why the brokerage fee is so high... If the sailboat is worth so little (cash value) that $2500 is a high percentage of the cost, then it's not worth the rest of the nonsense, either. Sell the boat with a very simple agreement, "as is", for a cash amount or for specified payment arrangements. I just bought my new boat with a "sales contract" written on a sheet of notebook paper. Valid, legally enforcable, and perfectly effective - considering the sale price wasn't higher than the broker fee you list.

sales contract

I agree with Matt B. I have bought and sold several sailboats and with the exception of my Catalina 30 have NOT used a sales contract. Here in California you need to sign off on the boat AND the trailer AND it's a GOOD IDEA to send in the relevant document to the DMV to verify that the boat and trailer is no longer owned by you or in your name. Broker

Don't blame you for wanting to get away from a broker. Around here they charge 10% of the sales price==and in most cases for nothing much in return. There are a FEW good ones, though. Is there something like a "Buy Owner" for boats===if not their needs to be.

Jay Stormer Or Dick Frenzel

Bob, I have a contract from a reputable broker here in California, would not do you much good in Texas though. Get in touch with Jay Stormer, he is a great guy, and would likely have a sample, or can steer you in the right direction; Dick, his partner is another stand-up guy too.
