The sailor (i forget who) that is going to have a new mainsail made,
should consider whether he would like full battens. I would
recommend. We got them a decade ago and it sure has saved a lot of
hassle.

I agree totally with having afully battened main. I have had mine for over
five years now and the pointing ability is fantastic, well worth the extra.

John,
Thanks for your advise will consider your recomendation to go with full
battens if the cost doesn't get out of hand.

To repeat "Paul M"s question how are dirty sails
cleaned? Can rust stains be removed?

Several years ago I decided my Vega sails needed cleaning. Soap and water
and a scrub brush didn't seem to help much. I sent the sails to a company in
Ford City Pennsylvania, Sail Care, and was amazed at the results. It is my
understanding that they use a dry cleaning (solvent) process for cleaning,
and they RE-RESIN the sail. When you get it bacsk the cloth has much of the
original stiffness. They have a web site That describes their services and
gives some cost estimates. Alternatively, try a local rug cleaner. I have
been told that some sail lofts subcontract their sail cleaning to rug
cleaners.

Has anyone taken sails to a commercial cleaners to be "laundered"? I
wash my old dingy sails in warm water and detergent?

Hi.:)
I sail through a good downpour and "if" the sails look better, I'm happy,
but "if" my sails are still intact, but still dirty, I'm very happy!

I was recommended to wash carefully in bath tub, no machine, and use very
little soft detergent, otherwise the fibers might be damaged. Someone also
suggested to use a little of chlore-based stuff to clean the spots - still
no machine, only hand wash - but I never tried.

I sent my sails out to be laundered to a local sail loft in Charleston. The
red dye from the cushions in the forward cabin stained the genoa and the
"storm jib." They got out the dye and the mildew and they stitched some weak
portions of the sail. So far I'm satisfied and glad I sent them out. They
have crisp body, too, but they didn't get the one rust stain out. The two
sails and 2 sail bags cleaning and repair cost about $130.

Why not add it to the Vega group files section. I think there are quite a number of us interested in seeing it.
