Sails, storm jibs

Hi All!

I'm about to order a new main sail and a roller furling. I also want a
storm jib. But what size should it be? I will be hoisting it on a
inner forestay. I want to use the old Jib 2 here when the wind is not
too strong. So the Storm jib should be small as Jib 2 will be used
except in very hard weather.

Btw, any experience of the Gale-Sail? (These are hooked around the
roller furling)Roger - Vega 605

Hello, I am a sailmaker. The trend for "staysail" style storm jib is
not to use an innner stay. Use a 2:1 halyard that is dead ended to the
mast. Use a technora (or spectra) in the halyard and in the luff of the
jib. This may be a little more expensive. This system is removable and
a lot quieter than a removable stay. Discuss this with your sailmaker.

Hi Roger,

I bought a 76 Vega last summer,as I checked through
the sail inventory I discovered that I don't have a
working jib.If yours is in good condition, and the
regular hanked-on type, I may be interested.
Thanks,
Emil.

Emnil, thanks for the interest but the working jib is pretty baggy and
worn out. Also, I live in Sweden so the postage would prolly be a bit
too hefty.

Emil: The hanked-on jib from a Catalina 25 has almost identical dimensions
to the Vega 110. I bought a new one last winter from Cruising Direct (a
North Sails company) for about 2/3 what I was quoted for a custom Vega sail.
They stock these. I wouldn't cross the Pacific with it, but it sets well and
has been in 20-25 knots of wind regularly. I have my old blown out jib (Ratsey
and Lapthorn) as a spare but don't intend to part with it. No comparison in
performance however, the new sail adds a lot to the Vega's performance.

Hi Bill,
Thanks for the info.I made a file earlier for useful
information that will be needed as I re-fit my
Vega.Yours will be a good addition.I have a year and a
half to work on her (and change her from a respectable
middle-ager to a goddess),and will need a lot of
stuff. So if someone changes to roller-furling and has
an excellent to good working jib,I could be a buyer.
Happy New Year,Emil.
