Has anyone put a bigger headsail on the hunter 26 water ballast? The small headsail does limit the boat in light air. It seems you would have to run the sheet outside of the shrouds to a block near the stern. Comments. I tried short sheeting for the first time last night from the jib clew to the stern pulpit spinnaker block. Comments?

Add a Genaker

We went to North Sails with the manual and the diagram of the boat. The response we got was that with the shrouds crossing the deck(because no backstay), a genoa would have problems with sheet block placement. So we got a gennaker. The gennaker is raised at the head with the jib halyard. The gennaker sheets go outboard of all the lines. We have a block on the top of the deck at the stern. Sometimes we then run the line forward to the winch, but that isn't always necessary. The line from the bottom of the genaker runs through a block or shackle attached at the deck end of the jib plate and back through a cam cleat to the cockpit. In 1-4 knot winds we are still dead in the water. But then from 5-8 or ? the genaker really kicks in. After that the wife yells and it comes down. The gennaker seems to be helpful on all but a close reach. The sail is easier to use than a spinnaker (we used to wrap ourselves up in those on a previous boat). You do have to watch. Sometimes we are heading downwind and things slowly start to pick up and we don't even notice. Then you are fighting taking it down in 12 knots winds. We hear that it is a good idea to buy the sock to douse it. We may have to spring for that in the future. Hope that helps.

Cruising Spinnaker

Check the Hunter Owners website store and you will find info on cruising spinnakers - I think they are the same or similiar to the genaker. They are great for light winds and easy to use with no pole involved. Buy a dousing sock if you get one for ease of handling. Several companies make this type of sail -I got mine from UK sails last year and included a free sock. UK used to be sold thru the website, but it looks like Doyle took their place and the costs have gone up considerably. Good luck.

Mine is a Sobstad from JSI

I have a Sobstad XVS Spindrifter, which is a 165% cruising spinnaker. I have an ATN dousing sock and a ATN tack strap to help control the sail. It cost me $900 smackers from JSI. Setting and dousing with the sock is a no brainer. It really makes a difference in light air. Mike Pajewski H26 "Loon"

Gennaker Halyard?

Since installing CDI roller furling for our H-26, we only use the jib halyard for raising and lowering the mast. The CDI wraps the jib around the forstay. Would a gennaker use the existing jib halyard, which is just below the forestay, or would I need another fitting higher up the mast? Harvey Small s/v Waiting for the Sun

UPS sail

Have been doing some research etc on Doyle's UPS sail. It looks and sounds like it will be the sail of choice for us, does anyone have and input or have one of these?

Doyle UPS

I bought a UPS for my Passage 42 for off the wind sailing and the light summer air common down here. Since my wife and I usually sail by ourselves we decided the UPS would be easier to handle than a full blown spinnaker. It sails well and provides a good turn of power and meets all of our expectations.

Should install new

I asked this quesion when I bought my cruising spinnaker. There is very little clearance between the top of the furler and the halyard exit. The new sail could foul on the furler, and there isn't enough room tu use the chute scoop either. I installed a new halyard. Mike Pajewski H26 "Loon"

USE THE JIB HALYARD...

JUST MAKE SURE THAT YOU ROLL THE JIB IN B4 YOU RAISE THE GENAKER. IT'S ALITTLE TIGHT BUT IT WORKS WELL. GOOD LUCK

short sheeting on H26

After 2 years on my 96 water ballast H26, I found a great but cheap way to speed up this small jibbed boat: running a short sheet from the jib clew back to the stern pulpit stanchions. I'm getting up to half knot faster speed on reaches because the aft-pull rather than the mast-a-beam jib sheet block allows for better wind adhesion/lift on the jib, making it far more efficient. Someone also suggested putting more wind indicators on the jib further aft to show the effect. My present experiment used a dog-leash like shackle and twine. I'm going to try better sheets. I presently call it my "secret weapon"! Try it. I'm doing much better racing after trying it. It basically overcomes one of the limitations of this boat.
