I wanted to order a set of new sails (93 26 s) I have been talking back and forth with Judy B. She has been quite helpful. Her reply:

I can build you the same mainsail that I built for the last two Mac 26 classics I did.

Luff 24.67'
Foot 10.25'
Leech 26.2'
Tack offset back 0.5"
Tack offset up 1"
Sail feed height: unknown - you'll have to supply this dimension if you want to avoid having to take slides out when you reef. Or we can take an educated guess if you can provide a picture.
Luff Slide A109s (11mm diameter)
Clew slide B012 (12 mm diameter)

My question is when I measured my luff from the old sail on the ground it was a full 12 inches shorter. I would assume that is bolt rope shrinkage and not being pulled exactly tight. I have a Bimini that was pretty much copied from Sumner...Thanks for that

My concern is with the extra foot (or perceived foot) it is going to be rubbing the Bimini or maybe not...just not sure. Is there anybody else out there that has noticed a difference in luff dimension when ordering new sails. My boat is stuffed into the garage and everything is tucked away for the winter. Its minus 30 and I'm not really keen on setting everything up and taking perfect measurements, Pretty sure my mast hasn't been shortened. I could measure the mast though does anybody know what it should be?

Thanks

Dave

so... the mast hasnt been shortened. but has the boom gooseneck been raised?...

this has been done on some boats so there is standing room (or nearly so) in the cockpit when sailing...

when you hoist the sail tight, how much room do you have between the sail and the halyard block?... this will tell you how much room you have to work with.
if you are at the block already, then it doesnt matter how much the bolt rope may have shrunk, you only have as much room as you have between the boom and the block.... unless you lower the gooseneck.

The original boom attachment is still there doesn't look like it has every been modified. I use a sliding goose neck now. I have about 12 inches ....probabaly a bit more to the halyard block. My standard procedure for last year was attach the boom to the sliding goose neck raise the sail as high as it would go and then pull the sail as tight as I could with a pulley attached to the base of the mast. So I could have easily streched it a foot when I was done. I have no reason to believe t anything has been modified and should think a standard sail should work, but wasn't sure. The new sails luff length makes sense if it isn't as stretchy as the one I have now. The sail Bimini combination seems to work for everybody else so I should think it should work for me to. I just wanted to double check without pulling my boat out again. I was pretty sure somebody may have had the same experience when buying a new somewhat generic sail.

We also bought our sails from Martin at Somerset sails after he was recommended by a former Mac owner. He also traded us a better genoa for the Endeavour.

His prices were as good or better than anyone else we found and the sails were kind of tailored to our needs and what we wanted after talking it over with him. We got a radial cut 135 genoa and a loose footed main with one reef point.

Give him a call....

...and let him talk to you about your needs and get a quote. Sure won't hurt anything and if you are interested in old cars you will be on the phone a while. He and his loft make the sails here in New York, not overseas,
