Now that I have sailed my 1987 H23 for a few months, I have definately come to the conclusion that I will need to buy a new jib. The one I have is the original from the previous owner. Although it is still in fairly good condition, it just doesn't provide much power at all since it more of a "working" jib. I would estimate it to be perhaps a 100 or 110 at best. What would y'all with the same boat (wing keel H23) recommend for the next jib (size wise)? I would also assume that I'll need to instal a genoa track and cars. Recommendations for that?

Same boat

I have an 87 model and even though I have a new working jib from the previous owner, I would like a bigger jib. We have a lot of light air days! You could check used sails as I have already except you have to find a headsail that has the right foil to fit your furler. If you don't have furler, hanks are pretty universal. There seem to be some good deals if you can find the right one. Check the web, Atlantic Sail Traders is one to look at. I bought a sail from CruisingDirect with my old boat and I thought the value was pretty good, cheaper in price than most lofts. Good luck and let me know how you do. Bob

Used not really a good value sometimes!!

Sometimes a used sail is not the best value. A new Dacron sail will need recut after only three years of sailing because they lose there shape from stretching. Yes they will work but stretched sails will make the boat heel more and be slower. Today's high tech sails are faster lighter and because they sell more of the Laminate sails sometimes are cheaper. It's the old supply and demend thing. Not many people are buying the dacron sails anymore so the price of Dacron is going up and the High Tech is going down. You will be better off buying new and if you get a 150 for say $200.00 it should be recut and have the shape put back in, so is it really a good deal? Also if it was such a good sail why is it on the choping block? Cliff

Suggest a 150 Genoa

Joel, I use a 150% Genoa most of the time. You'll need to install tracks just inside the railing by the lifeline post. I can send a sketch of my installation if you'd like. Regards, Jerry

Thanks

Jerry, That would be great if you could send me a diagram. If possible, send it to swan@videoshare.com. If it's not on your computer, email me and I can give you an address to send it. What kind of tracks / cars did you use? joel

Whoa Nelly

If you install the tracks along the edge of the toe rail say good buy to trying to point very high. The T Track should be installed as close to the cabin top as possible.
