Sails and Shrouds

Hi. I was out yesterday in my 2005 Hunter 33 on a beam reach in 7 knot winds. The Main was out almost all the way, and it was up against the leeward shrouds--I could see them outlined against the Main. This doesn't seem good. Is it ever acceptable to have the Main against the shrouds? Should I just take it as a signal that I should bring teh Main in? Thanks.

(I still have a lot to learn, I appreciate the advice on this forum!)

I own a 99 H310 with the B&R rig. When off the wind I flatten the sail as much as possible with vang and traveller to help minimize the contact. In lighter air, under 10 kts apparent, I ease the outhaul to make the bottom of the sail fuller. At 10Kts apparent or higher a reef is called for which will also reduce the amount of contact.

Just have ...

...spreader patches put on the sail. You can buy self adhesive patch material and cut it to shape. But the answer is yes it perfectly normal for sails to touch spreaders. Do you have telltales on the main? Without telltales you just will never get your trim correct.

Yes, bring it and minimize contact.

There is nothing to be gained, by laying the mainsail against the swept back spreaders and shrouds of the B&R rig, but chafe. The added sail area provided by the large roach of the sail will make up for the sail angle when sailing downwind or on a broad reach.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I have in-mast furling, so the main doesn't have much roach, so I will just be very careful about touching the shrouds, knowing that it will happen sometimes.
