It's hard to imagine they could have sunk without a trace or a call for help. I hope they turn up at some marina getting their engine repaired.

Ward & I heard the CG calls repeatedly over the radio on Saturday. While we were listening, the report was for a "solo sailor" overdue and missing. It sounds like they didn't have the complete information initially on Saturday.

We also heard calls for an injured humpback whale near Barnegat. Apparently, it was about 1/4 mile from our position when we were about 1 mile offshore. We were on the lookout for whales, as it seems that they are commonly seen along the shoreline now. They feed on the rebounding Menhaden schools in the area.

update:
The Coast Guard has safely located the two missing men and their dog 100 miles off the coast of Cape Henry, NC. They were found by a rescue aircrew flying an HC-130 out of Elizabeth City, NC.
and a correction.
Correction: They were safely located 100 miles east of Cape Henry, VA and intend to proceed to Cape Hatteras, NC.

Great news...
Jim...

PS: Same size boat as mine.
PSS: That will teach them not to call their Girlfriends on time.:kick:

That is a great outcome! I doubt they are going to land at Cape Hatteras, either! I suppose they might get in at Oregon Inlet, but I never hear about sailboats going in there. Ocracoke?? don't know about that one either. I'd guess they need to round the Cape and make it all the way to Beaufort/Morehead City, no?

A case where having a Garmin Inreach on board dropping a turd every 10 minutes would have been quite beneficial!

Even if the Coast Guard doesn't charge them for the expense, they will be paying for their mistake for a long time, I'm guessing.

Yep, The red beard guy was supposed to call her and she reported them missing on Saturday.
@jssailem and I were talking about doing a Weather and Forecasting scenario about weather planning when I saw the USCG link.

It has been very bad weather and small craft advisory of Rhode Island since Last Thursday.

The weather off Hatteras ain't great.

I'm glad they are OK but someone is going to be so far into the doghouse you won't see anything but a puff of dirt from in there for a long time.

I can hear the conversation now......

"No you didn't say you'd call me next Friday, you said THIS Friday."

"dear how do you think we'd cover that much distance in 3 days? of course it wasn't this Friday"

"Well how would I know, I'm not a sailor, that is YOUR thing remember."

(or something along those lines ;))

When you think about it though. With the amount of money spent flying planes and SAR looking for a couple of days. It would probably be cheaper for the USCG to just buy all boats a Spot GPS tracker. We'll call it the electronic leash initiative. or the modern day widows walk program, or the we're tired of spouses crying on the phone for nothing, or the …… well you get the idea.:p

All seriousness though, I am very relieved and happy to hear such a great outcome. Kudos to the USCG and their brave men and women that willingly answer that call to help us.

I would have been much better if they had filed a Float Plan.
and the USCG would be able to estimate their location.

I wonder what the real story is. The radio calls indicated that they were expected in Norfolk. Did they purposely blow right by the Chesapeake entrance or did weather cause them to stay offshore? I guess we won't know unless there is a follow-up story. It would be pretty inconsiderate if they purposely went past their stated destination and didn't have a way to let anybody know. I agree that with today's technology, there is no excuse for putting people through that worry.
