Now that oil from the Deepwater Horizon disaster has made its way into the Mississippi Sound, I'm going through sailing withdrawals. It is too risky to go for a sail with oil just outside the harbor. Fear of damaging mechanical systems, staining the hull, or ruining this year's new bottom paint is heavy in my mind as I sit at the dock behind protective booms and ponder what's to come next. For someone who is use to year round sailing, sitting as the dock while perfect southery breezes blow is very hard. Now I know what my northern brethern experience at the end of each year's sailing season.

Am I crazy or what?

That's how I feel after we have to pull the boat at the end of September. Got a sailing dinghy or something you can tool around with inside the booms?

polluted water or medical disability, it don't make a whole hellofalot of difference. I am not agile enough to move about on a boat safely so I stay in port and dream of better days to come. We will get past this mess in the gulf and I will run again. sometimes S#$t happens.

I'm afraid

I'm afraid it is going to take a long time for this to pass. But it will eventually. With my boat on the hard, it is difficult to get up a lot of ambition to get finished, just to sit. Hopefully I will still be able to do day sails in Ponchatrain.

I feel it too, big time. I was slammed with work last month, and also took the family with me to DC for one of my working trips there, and I'm still crazily busy now. But I had a week and a half carved out of my schedule for our long awaited first trip to Pensacola... I should be anchored at Petit Bois right now.

With the oil staying over in the AL/FL area up until now, our alternative was a simple 4-day trip to Ship Island this week. That's out too, obviously. The next chance we'll have is mid-August (oil likely won't be clear by then), then Labor Day weekend (maybe will be clear?).

It sucks to put all the money and effort into owning a sailboat, only to be locked out of using it. Oh well, nothing I can do about it now.

Hmmm... on second thought, weather is pretty crappy right now, so I guess I'd either be postponing a few days, or I'd be tucked in at Lake Yazoo.

File a claim

Tony Hayward went home to sail while the gulf was in s--t. So you should file a claim for yacht club fees, lost of enjoyment, mental stress and suffering.

If I am a lawyer, I'll create a class action deal.

And I just bought my boat!

I share your pain. I just bought my boat and haven't really gotten to sail it yet due to BP. At least my boat is still in Lake Pontchartrain (couldn't move it to the Coast), but then the news reported tar balls entering LP this last weekend. So we'll see if LP may be off limits as winds from the SE push more crud through the Rigolets.

If you're in Slidell, keep us posted please!

How far into the lake did oil get? I heard it was boomed off at the csx railroad bridge.

HOUMA, La. - Oil observers reported sheen and tar balls in the Rigolets and Lake Pontchartrain this morning to the Slidell Forward Operating Base of the Deepwater Horizon Response.
Response crews placed a combined 600-feet of hard and soft boom at a natural choke point in the Rigolets to prevent more oil from getting through to Lake Pontchartrain. Nineteen manual skimming vessels and four decontamination vessels based out of Orleans and St. Tammany were dispatched to the reported oiled areas. Cleanup operations were conducted throughout the day both up and down stream of the choke point.
As of 7:30 p.m. cleanup crews have collected 1,020 pounds of tar balls and waste. Collected oil is being tested to determine if from the Deepwater Horizon wellhead.
Cleanup operations are scheduled to resume Tuesday morning.

What I know at this time

Far as I know right now, is that oil in the Rigolets and LP is pretty light. From what they are saying is a few tar balls, and a very small light sheen in places. Virtually all fishing west of the Causeway is now illegal. Word is that may be temporary. But any hope of going east from the lake is over. For the time being, the Rigolets are boomed off. You might be able to go through New Orleans and get into Lake Bourne, but they you have more serious oil problems. It ain't gonna get better very soon. Best hope we have is for a good steady west or NW wind for several days. And worst is a hurricane to get close. That would probably be the final nail in the coffin.

yipes--after sailing with n n e for a near year , i am having sailing withdrawals big time --trying to repair my formosa for sailing to mazatlan--was thinking would be nice to keep the sailing partnership alive, but only if both parties are willing and eager--i will not shanghai anyone unwilling to sail with me......lol--if you want to sail ponchartrain and not go to mazatlan, is all good--- but you have an invite and you are more than welcome to get here whenever you are able.....we rarely get lightning, NEVER get hurrycames--they like WARM water--we dont have that ,,lol...and we donot have the oil problem. we do have bubba daboatkat.....
