Sailing with the pop top popped.

Do you sail with the pop top up (during nice weather of course)? Is there enough clearance for the boom without a topping lift?

Pop-top up makes the boat more fun.

We always sail with the pop-top up; goes up at the dock before we set sail, doesn't come down until we have to (to drop the mast). Pop-top up doesn't allow use of boom vang, but it opens the boat up and makes being inside the cabin much more enjoyable; not only does it give you standing room, but stand up and you're part of the action both fore and aft, looking out easily, with plenty of air circulating.

yes, when calm

The 26D top clears the mast. and the vang cant be used... If I encountered a lot of wakes or waves, I would think about cross bracing the top. (stress on bolts). But its great shade...

Other MacGregor 26S Glendale,
Pop top down under sail

I know of a Catalina 22 that was sailing on a light wind, lazy afternoon with the pop top up. A sudden dust devil came up and knocked the boat down with such a force that one of the crew from the cockpit was thrown into the genoa (that was flat on the water). With the pop top and hatch open, the boat filled with water and sank almost instantly. Fortunately all survived, but the sailing career on one family was severely shortened. Lesson learned-chaos occurs; or words to that effect. From this observation, I have made it my personal operational standard to always have the poptop down and secured, the forward hatch secured, and the companionway hatch closed while sailing. In more windy conditions, I insist that the hatchboard be in place. I usually sail single handed so this is seldom up for discussion. I would not impose these requirements on someone elses boat. However, this is how I feel comfortable taking care of mine. On the other hand I have never heard of a Mac sinking. But I would perfer not to unload a boat full of water. It not would look good on the resume. Steve

sinking. The one that immediately comes to mind was a 25 that sank in Lake Michigan off Chicago a couple of years ago. I too always sail with the pop top down and the forward hatch closed and latched whether single handing or not. You just never know. I suppose on a smaller lake it would be okay, but not on my sailing grounds.
