Hi, I have recently bought a Hunter 29.5. Somebody told me that sailing with genoa only, without hoisting the mainsail, could be risky, as there is no conventional backstay and the mast load would be unbalanced. This is especially important for moderate to strong winds. I am not sure whether this is true, but does anybody have any idea about it? Thanks, Cenk

Cenk, I have a 336. Not sure if this will apply to you. My boat sails fine with just the jib as long as the wind is less than 15 knots. As the wind increases, you cannot sail upwind with the jib. Wind just pushes the nose of the boat. I don't think there is any stability issues.

Here is the real deal from experts like

Practical Sailor. The rig cannot handle the load of to Genoa only! This has less to due with the B&R rig as it does with the placement and size of the shrouds and chain plates. I jib in medium air for small distances in my Hunter 28 when my mom is on board! When you get a change look at the Catalina's rig and compare it to your rig.

So, where are the dismasted Hunters? I see Hunters sailing every time I go out with genoas only. The yards should be filled with Hunters with their masts being replaced and restepped. The people who talk this garbage should take a freshman physics course, and pay close attention to the "resolution of force vectors" part. I dislike the B&R rig because of the sailing handling issues it causes, but it's not unstable, it's just as strong -- probably stronger -- than a conventional rig.

Yo, Droopy

You seem to be saying Practical Sailor finds it risky to run the B&G rig on genoa (jib, actually) only. Eh? Why would the plates be at greater risk.

Oh, I guess I should have said,

that my mast didn't break, crack, yada, yada.... Droopy, i'm afraid that you just ain't right... Since I've had my boat, I've been routinely jib sailing it... offshore and on the Bay. The roller furling main is of little use, ... but it sure is convienent. And I'll take my Hunter over a Catalina any day.

Hey guys, Droopy is just trying to fire us up,

(fireworks for the fourth) In a court of law, a judge would "take judicial notice" that his statement was false. Oh, I can prove it false if need be but I'll just take judicial notice. :)
