Sailing with a bimini

My new ('93) Hunter 23.5 has a bimini mounted on the gunnels (I have no stern rails). Can I sail with the bimini up or is it designed to be used at anchor? It appears to be too tall to fuit under the boom, but I have yet to be able to put it up. Alos, has anyone invested in a hatch cover (looks like a dodger)? Will it function myuch the same as a dodger despite not having the ability to look forward through it like a dodger? It's a lot cheaper than a dodger and looks to serve in similar ways.Thanks for the input!!!!

Bimini

Our Bimini is on sliders and can be set so the boom clears the bimini. The skippersmate complained about to much sun and not enough breeze on most calm days. However without a window, I have to lean out over the side to see the sail and the tell-tails. I did put some tell-tails on the shrouds but over 5-mph and the area we're in with so many hills and sudden wind shifts, I prefer the view and unobstructed mobility. You may have to hitch up the topping lift to prevent the boom from rubbing on the bimini frame. Sit back, enjoy and watch the butterflys pass you by.

Depends on where you are

Sailing without a bimini up north may be OK, but down here a bimini makes a huge difference when cruising, especially in the summer. When raised, your bimini should fit under the boom while under way. Do not use the topping lift or solid vang to hold the boom up, as you won't be able to trim your sails properly.I check sail trim by looking out under either edge of the bimini. The cockpit coaming is low, so it's easy enough to lean back and look up. I've seen people with clear plastic windows in their biminis, but I think they're a waste of time because the sun fogs them quickly and you end up not being able to look through them anyway.A rain hood over the cockpit is a great idea, in fact I'm working on one now. bimini

I have a 94'23.5 with an Ameriseam bimini.I have to raise the topping lift a little to clear the boom. It does change the sail shape, but at least I'm in the shade. S ince I'm not racing, comfort comes first.
