There is a challenge.

I can't get by the idea of costal sailing from Southern Texas. If you do it, please post your story. I'd like to find some 26 owners that would trail down to Corpus Christi or somewhere around there in the the dead of winter. Hopefully, someone with experience.

Chuck,

People sail small boats all over the world. Some even live to tell about it. As far as your question about the crossing from Miami (better,... Key Biscane)to the Bahamas, there are OCCASIONALLY relatively calm conditions that would make sailing your boat over, no more difficult than any other 70 mile (or so) passage. Have 2 friends that motored over in April in almost calm conditions. If you go at the right times of the year and can wait for weeks for calm weather, your boat will make it OK... otherwise, make sure that you have an EPIRB, a life raft, a submersible VHF & GPS, and plenty of life insurance (actually, not a bad idea to have all of the above even in calm conditions).

I have heard.....

a lot of people who go over in smaller boats, but they are normally power boats. It can be done. The best advice would be to go to BoaterEd http://www.boatered.com/ and go to the Bahamas section.

You can expect ANYTHING!

Chuck: You can expect ANYTHING when you cross the gulf stream. Get a copy of Roger & Suzie Mummah's book Cruising Endless Summer. This is not a trip for the faint of heart in a water ballasted boat but not impossible. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?product_id=1565095&cat=22462&type=3&dept=3920&path=0%3A3920%3A18917%3A22462
