sailing to Napatree

Does anyone have any experience sailing to Napatree Beach in R.I. from Mystic? Any hints on going through the channel? Thanks for your help.

stay in the channel.....

follow the channel markers there are rocks especially during low tide. You may see some locals cut some corners but I've seen more then a couple of boats clean their prop by cutting the mark where the channel splits between the river and the town...

Been There...

I went a couple of season ago. The tide was down and I had about6 feet of water on my meter. I draw 4'9" on my L37. It was about 4:00pm on a Sunday and everyone was heading home from the weekend. The channel is wide, but as Steve F said, follow the markers and you'll be OK. I came in thru Watch Hill passage and pointed to Stonington. The channel splits at the R/G marker and I followed the markers. Nice, relaxing place. Try the stuffed clams at Olympia's.

It is a beautiful spot and the holding is good. But as the previous poster mentioned, follow the channel. BTW it's a LONG way in.MPJ

Right Red Upon Entry

Follow the long chanel in from "SP" bouy (Stonington Point) and don't cut any bouys. When you round Sandy Point you thing you are going up on the beach but it quite deep. Keep the depth gague on! The speeding power boaters may make it "lumpy" for you. I suggest that you power in the first time as it can be an "all hands on" event when you make a hard 90 at #18 if you sail in. Even powering in will take 30 - 45 min in a sailboat. I used to throw the hook out for 5 days between N"2" (Dennison Rk) and the beach and take the inflatable into the beach. There is a free public Town Dock for landing the inflatable when you go to Watch Hill. It is to the North of the Yacht Club. Enjoy...its a GREAT place to relax!
