Does anyone have an opinion as to the best time of the year to make
a cruise to Nova Scotia? I would be coming from Miami and don't mind
taking my time to port hop.

Just a wild guess, but from my perspective (21 degrees N. Latitude) I'd say mid summer.

Hi Robert,

Probably anytime from mid-June through August would be a good time to go to
Nova Scotia from Maine. Of course you can expect a lot of fog almost
anytime! Just in case you're interested, there is a publication here in New England
called Points East that sponsors a flotilla from Maine to Nova Scotia or New
Brunswick every year. Next year's flotilla is from Northeast Harbor, Maine
(on Mt. Desert Island) to Nova Scotia. The dates for this are June 18-July
2, 2005. You can get all the information about the flotilla by going to their
web site at _www.pointseast.com_ (Points East Magazine) . They have a
section dedicated to the Fundy flotilla and you can get on a mailing list.
If you do get up to Maine, it would be great to meet you. We keep our Vega on
the Benjamin River off Eggamoggin Reach. There are dozens of islands and
coves to sail to in this area. Hope you make it up here.

Smooth Sailing,

Hello Robert:

I have sailed the Maine Coast for a few years now. The summer is a
good time to sail the Maine coast. The winds typically are from the
southwest; hence, sailing is easiest traveling in an easterly
direction. (Hence the expression of Maine being "downeast".)

North of Portland, you will find the coast to be very interesting
sailing. There is a plethora of islands and places to explore.
There is a fine cruising guide available that detail places to go and
see (Title: ?Cruising the Maine Coast?, you should be able to find it
on Amazon.com).

Be prepared for fog. A good GPS system will help a lot here. The
southwesterlies bring warm humid air from southern New England into
the cold waters of Maine and Nova Scotia and you get fog. I have
spent several successive days traveling in heavy fog. This is
particularly true east of Mt Desert Island. I have sailed past
Schoodic point and Petit Manan and never laid eyes on them.

I will say that sailing east of Bar Harbor is good fun. The number
of boats and particularly the number pleasure boats drops off
significantly.

Make sure you stop at Roque island. The white sand beach and the
lagoon is worth seeing.

You may want to think about going to New Brunswick. I have not done
this yet but I am told you can cross the reversing falls in St. Johns
at slack tide and cruise the river beyond the falls. I think this
crossing is not without some risk. Slack tide is not for very long
there and the falls are substantial.

You should enjoy the trip.

Having lived in the area, June thru Sept. Oct gets real iffy. I have hauled out a number of times in late Oct and Nov...in the snow. Strong reason why we moved to FL. Halifax is really nice as is the west coast of NS. Maine will have FOG recommend radar or you will age prematurely.
