In 3 years we plan to do the Atlantic (passage) with the goal of landing in England/Ireland. After that the boat will be put up for the winter (cradle) with the plan to return the long way to the Carribean. Any suggestions on which port towns in England/Ireland, that we might consider to land at and leave a vessel for a year? We will be looking for a location that will have a boatyard that can store and also do work. (I'm thinking the passage could be tough on our boat and something is bound to need fixing)

Cork Harbour

Cork harbour in Ireland wight be a good choice. It is home to the oldest yacht club in the world, the R.C.Y.C., in crosshaven, which is on the owenboy river in cork harbour. There is a boatyard there but it can be quite busy. My boat is in east ferry, where shore storage is available, but there's no boatyard. However there are many tradesmen in the area who will come to the place to work on a boat. There is also cork dockyard ltd. They are more of a commercial shipping dockyard but i have seen yachts having work done there. hope this helps.

Other suggestions...

You may also consider Falmouth or Plymouth Harbors in the UK as both are large harbors with lots of service facilities. Also Looe Harbor is a beautiful place.

Kinsale in Ireland is incredibly well protected, and you might consider even leaving the boat in the water. Penzance in Cornwall, west of Plymouth, Falmouth and Looe, has a boat yard with an inner harbour with a lock -- the main harbour dries out, but the basin with the lock maintains water -- the boatyard is professional. If you are in any Catalina or other boat builder's International Associations, there may be members who live there would could also help you. Get in touch with your association membership person. Safe journey. Stu

Crosshaven

We sailed transatlantic to Crosshaven. The people there were wonderfully warm and welcoming, and the yard there handled the Irish Admiral's cup boats (and from what I hear it's current equivalent). The workmanship we saw was excellent. We visited a number of other ports including Kinsale, Youghal, Wexford, Arklow, Wicklow, Dun Laoghaire, and Howth. Some are fishing harbors, not equipped to handle yacht work. Crosshaven or Howth would top my list, with Crosshaven being closer to where you're headed when winter's over, and since it's further South, possibly a bit nicer weather-wise.
