Anyone here sailed to Baltimore on an August weekend? We are considering a weekend cruise to Baltimore and wondered if anyone has particular recommendations for marinas (either to stay at or to stay away from) or any watch-outs for things to be careful of. We'd like to be in or near the Inner Harbor and Fells Point for shoreside entertainment and activities. Thanks in advance!

Inner Harbor

If you want to be right in the middle of everything call ahead to Inner Harbor Marina. Visit the Aquarium for sure; check out Little Italy for restaurants (walking distance eastnortheast of the aquarium or by water taxi). If you have kids who are baseball fans and can get tickets, the ballpark is also within walking distance; and there is an IMAX at the Baltimore Science Center just 100 yards west of the marina. Want a great view and a little more exercise; climb Federal Hill which overlooks the south side of the harbor. One day will not be enough, three may be necessary considering your home port, but plan on a great time. We were supposed to go last weekend but Charlie intervened.

Inner Harbor East

We prefer Inner Harbor East due to its location and the people there are very friendly. For our nickel IHE is more central to everything that we like but is just a tad more distant from the main hustle and bustle. Fells Point, Little Italy, The Inner Harbor are our main attractions. Inner Harbor Marina is very nice and convenient to the Harbor. It is more central to the Camden Yards and Federal Hill. Our first few times we stayed at IHM and it is very nice. Which ever you choose, you will have a great time. There is ESPN Zone, if you have youngun's that need entertaining. The science center is always a winner. If you like celestial, check out the schedule for a star show. In Little Italy, DaVinci's is a very low keyed and very good restaurant. Ciao Bello is our favorite but is slightly more upscale. Try to save room for dessert around the corner at Vacarro's. If you are into Sefood, you can not get better than at Mo's. Mo's Seafood and Pasta is a little more casual and right down the street. Some of our friends like staying closer to Fells Point and Canton at Anchorage Marina or one of the others in the Northwest Harbor. Anchorage has a pool on their floating dock. If the weather is clear you can take the elevator to the top of the Baltimore Trade Center for some spectacular views of the bay. All in all, we think that you can't go wrong in Baltimore. It is a great place. good luck, Mike D

Pier Six

If you are interested in live music, Pier Six (on the north side of the harbor) has national acts performing on a regular basis. I saw the Moody Blues on a trip up there in June.

harborview

Let me cast a vote for Harborview. The facilities, including pool are great and immacculate. It is quieter than Inner Harbor but still just a short walk away. Also, the water taxi has a stop right there. The Federal Hill neighborhood is funky and fun. Great restaurants. There is a cafe at the marina with great breakfast food. The people are very friendly and helpful. Also, for anyone with a dog, the Federal Hill park, just uphill from both the Harbourview and the Inner Harbor Marina allows dog walking off leash. If kids are involved check out the Port Discovery Museum. My kids range from 17 to 9 years and all were entertained, including the 45 year old kids who brought them. Have a great time.

A little further out but still good

We have stayed at Anchorage Marina in Canton numerous times including the last 3 July 4's and have enjoyed the stay. We've also stayed next door at Baltimore Marine Center. Both have good facilities, probably comparable to those mentioned above, and are right across the way from Fort McHenry if you care to visit that landmark. The water taxi stop is close by too. You probably can't go too wrong with any of the ones mentioned.

Baltimore

Anchorage Marina is the place to stay. floating docks, nice people, and next to Canton which has become the happening place with great local flavor. Also, Its a short walk to Fells Point and Little Italy. Stay away from the Inner Harbor...crowds of tourist, over-priced eateries, and no air.
