I just got back from sailing in the san juan islands.the helpful hintS from the readers on this site were very helpful. THE SAILING IS FANTASTIC. YOU HAVE TO GO. IT IS BETTER THAN THE CARRIBEAN OR THE BVI IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS EMAIL ME. I USED SAN JUAN SAILING CHARTERS, OUT OF BELLINGHAM WA, VERY PROFESSIONAL.YOU GET A USED BOAT,(SOMEBODY OWNS IT AND THEY CHARTER IT OUT AND MAINTAIN IT), FOR A VERY REASONABLE RATE. Wow, we must really be spoiled.

We don't even stop there anymore. We keep going to Canada for Princes Louisa and then Desolation Sound. What a wonderful world! (let's protect it)

San Juan Sailing

The currents are bad, the wind is flukey and unpredictable if non-existant during the summer months, there are rocks and reefs everywhere, your raw water intake will suck in eel grass, overheat your engine and destroy your raw water impeller, parts are hard to get, it always rains, stinkpot wakes will swamp you, and food and fuel are expensive. I'd stick to the BVI or Carribean if I were you.... An Emmet Watson KBO member (keep the bastards out!)

And Dean,

you didn't mention all of the air pollution. On many days you can't see your bow. Or is that fog? :)

And Powerboaters Everywhere!!

Dean - that was really good and I'm with you. Also, don't forget, the powerboat species migrates to the San Juans (and the not-so-Desolation Sound) about this time every year. And, not only that, but it's the only place I've ever seen where they actually BRAG about having the most expensive fuel prices! Something to consider if you want to go anywhere because of the light summer-wind days.

rookie mistake

Robert is obviously a SJ rookie, coming home and spewing enthusiasm about the sailing thereabouts. Only nice thing I have to say about the San Juans is that they keep the rookies out of the Gulf Islands. And brrrrrr, that water's cold up there.
