Still wondering if anyone on this forum has ever done a sailing vacation on Shasta Lake or Whiskeytown Lake in Northern California? Anyone? Any comments? Suggestions?

Whiskeytown - yes

Whiskytown gives the feeling it is a lot higher elevation than it is and the scenery is nice. When I was there the lake level wasn't down very far at all, only a relatively few feet so as compared to Shasta with it's clay shoreline it was much nicer. The winds are, of course, fluky but you can expect that when there are high mountains around. The highway geting there has very steep grades to towing a boat there isn't the easiest but then that may be why it's not as crowded. I don't think there are ever any houseboat-type boats there like on Shasta, and because the water is cold there weren't any waterskiers, either. All positives. It's much more of an Alpine lake than Shasta and because there is no Interstate running through it, and no big highways nearby, it's much quieter. Pine trees. One end of the lake rises to the Eddies, a 10,000 ft range that will have snow until well after June or July. There is also a nice runway there if you like flying in small aircraft. You can taxi right up to the shore. Another nice out-of-the-way lake is Lake Spaulding in the Sierras. This is a PG&E reservoir. Lots of granite along the shore, high-altitude, and relatively quiet. At least it used to be - that may (likely) have changed.
