Subject: Message: We thought about leaving San Diego and sailing south to Rosarita for the night. Then sailing back to San Diego the next day. We can anchor offshore and dinhgy in. Our question is, do we need Pasports, visas, or what? It would be a first time trip from us, and we just don't know the answers. Any Help?

Passports are not usually required for travel to and from Mexico. Proper United States Identification, Boat registration and insurance papers are a must! Be warned!!!!! you can't take a firearm into Mexico or Mexican waters unless you can manage to get a special permit from the local and Ferderal authorities and from Mexican Customs. Also be aware that your insurance is probably not valid in Mexico and you may have to carry a supplimental policy. Check with your insurance agent and get the official response in writing. Bumping into a dock or other boat will mean that you show proof of insurance, pay up now, or get your boat impounded or even siezed. There are tales around several San Diego area marinas of "pirates" in Mexican waters. While I have no first hand knowledge of this, I have heard enough of them over the years to check this out rather closely. True or False, I don't know. Depending on your boat, how well it sails and the weather, Rosarito BC may be a hard days sail. Don't forget that you do have to check in with customs on your return. If you stay more than 72 hours, you will need to purchase a Tourist Permit, About $21.00 US. Good Luck Mike
