We're going round next June or July, starting from Port Hardy around mid-June and taking 4-6 weeks on 'the outside' I'm sure there are lots of mid-larger Catalinas have been around - any stories or favourite places or warnings you'd be willing to share? Thanks. RG

Rounding Cape Scott

You may want to verify, as I have not circumnavigated the Island myself, but I think it is well known that just prior to rounding Cape Scott, there is a shallow pass that can get extreemly nasty when the current opposes the wind. Check out the North end of Goletas Channel, called Nawhitti Bar. Most folks stay at nearby Bull Harbor & wait for the right tide/wind conditions before attempting the rounding of the Cape. This will be the most critical rounding you have.

Nahwitti Bar

Pacific Yachting June 2004 has an excellent article on crossing the Bar. It also refernces several other books. The same magazine typically has stories about various achorages on the West side. Good luck with the trip.
