I am working on a project and wanted to get some information from the general public. What information about a boat is important to you if you are purchasing another boat (new or used)? What details, parts, or anything else you can think about, help you in your quest for a boat?

it depends

on what you want to use it for and how you want to sail, where you typically sail, how handy you are to do some work yourself and where you want to store it. Having answered these questions, may help you choose the type of boat you are looking for, which could be anything from a daysailer or pocket cruiser to an ocean passage ready fully equiped blue water cruiser.

Be more specific

Wow! That's like asking NASA what they had to consider before building the space shuttle. There's far too many variables in such a generalized question. Day sailing? Racing? Ocean voyaging? Price range? Even among these the answers will vary significantly. Glad to help, but narrow it down.

More about project

I am working on a database which needs to include as much information about a boat as I can put in. For whatever the reason you are looking at a boat, what things effect the purchase (other than the seller, and price)? Hull type, material, sail size, or material?, whatever anyone looks at when looking for a boat. I am trying to come up with a respectable amount of fields for a seller/buyer to sell/find a boat.

Nope

Its for a project my brother has asked me to partake in. He hasn't given me much specifics (domain, what they are planning on doing) he just asked "When looking for a boat, what information helps someone in deciding to go see a boat, or even purchase it?" He asked me, as I am on my 2nd sailboat, and I've purchased several power boats in the past. I figured, my requirements may be different from others, so I want to get a general list together, so that he can decide which are important to his project. thanks, Kenneth Craft
