I'm considering doing a charter out of North Ft. Myers, FL. Looking at the charts, it appears that there is quite a bit of motoring involved to get to sailing waters. Anyone with local knowledge that can offer some advice would be appreciated. I've been used to Chesapeake Bay sailing where I was about 20 minutes from sails up and engine off.

Thanks.

Compared to home port, probably right. Depends on where you charter from. But just to the north, Charlotte Harbor is a great cruising area--charters available out of Burnt Store Marina (SW Florida Charters I think). Short drive from n. Ft. Myers. Otherwise, head south under Sanibel Causeway and you have Fort Myers Beach to Marco Isl. to cruise.

You can sail on the Caloosahatchee,if the wind is right. Burnt store marina on Ch is only a few minutes by auto from N Ft Myers, and you can sail within 5 minutes of leaving the charter dock as long as you sail west past the shoals.

If you are planning on sailing from N. Ft. Myers, you must be aware of the College Ave/ Cape Coral Pkwy bridge, which is 55' clearance. Make sure you can dlear. It's about 1 hour from there to the Sanibel Causeway bridge (68') and then south another 1/s hour to clear the shoals at the south end of Sanibel. But it's nice sailing and/or motoring.
