I'm planning a family camping/Boating trip to lake Cumberland Kentucky. I'm hoping for some local advice regarding sailing on the Lake in late July. Is there any wind? What's the best marina for sailboats -gin pole etc. We'll be trailering in our Hunter 240 so I can get the mast up without a gin pole but I prefer to use one for safety. My family will be camping at Lake Cumberland State Resort Park and we're hoping to dock near there (The State Dock Marina looks to be all power/houseboats) from the brochure they mailed us. Thanks for the input. Ken

That is power boat heaven.

Bathing suits optional. Avoid weekends if at all posible.

Right End

Ken, you will be on the only part of the lake that gets wind if there is to be any. I grew up near there and that open area of the lake is home to the only sailboats. The farther east on the lake you travel the narrower it gets and the steeper the bluffs get which prevent good wind from reaching the water surface. Don't be surprised if you get a few odd stares because of your boat. When I left there 20+ years ago there were less than a dozen sailboats on the lake. Staying at the state park travel to the west and you will be in more open water and hopefully have enough wind to enjoy the beautiful views. Enjoy.

to mention, if you desire an adult beverage take it with you. That is dry country with the only place on the lake that sells any adult beverages at Burnside, which is 25-35 miles east of where you are staying by water. That is a long trip in a sailboat. Have a great time the water is fantastic.
