Hunter 1999 Passage h420 CC Oceanside
We have sold our house and moving up to Portland Oregon.
i want to take our boat with us.
it is a 1999 hunter 420 passage.

So do I hire a captain to move it for us or do I sail it myself with crew.

We want to do this in June 2013, best weather window.

4 people on board.

The boat is in Oceanside Ca, I need to get it to Portland via the Columbia river, which I have sailed on for years when I lived there before.

At a 7 kt cruising speed we are looking at about 8 days sailing time. (1500 miles)

Has anyone done enough cruising to give me an idea of how much fuel it would take. Soal keel, Stock engine, clean bottom.

Bob,

Try this: http://georgebenson.us/cruising-the-northwest-coast‎/

George used to have a handy Cruise Narrative on his site that I used to regularly link to. He seems to have removed it. Darn.

Perhaps he put it (the cruIse narrative) into a book. Very worthwhile. If you're interested, pm me, I have downloaded the pdf years ago.

Essentially, you can harbor hop up the coast from here (SF).

For your boat I would consider a burn rate of 1 GPH. At 7 nm per hour it would take 214 gallons to cover the distance. If you sail or motorsail you could lower that total figure but should your average speed drop to lets say 5 knots you could be looking a 300 gallons. If it were me I would plan on two to three weeks for such a trip to allow for foul weather and other unforeseen happenings. Don't discount the option of breaking up the trip into a couple of legs.

Go to Hawaii First?

When I lived there we met lot's of folks who were on their way from Southern California to the Northwest. I've not sailed the west coast but remember sailing north along the coast described as sailing uphill all the way.

There used to be a list at the Waikiki and Hawaii Yacht Clubs of guys ready to crew.

You want to make sure the weather is right when going past point conception. If you have not done this before Roger Smith over at Cabrillo Yachts on Shelter Island is someone you should talk to ...he is a 500 ton skipper and moves boats up and down the coast a lot.
