be careful of the 'main stream' qualification certifates that are carried out by many sailing schools. and be careful of many scools that will spin out your lessons unecessarily - could mention several very big names - but i believe that will cause something legal.if you have non-tidal water, rent or borrow a 15-20 foot gaff rig.with some knowlegde of wind from motorboating you will have some wiond sense.get a simple no more than 5 dollar booklet shewing the simple basics of sailing and points of sail - no more. study it for a couple of evenings, find a day when there is some wind but no more than,say 10-12 knots, and take the boat out.relax and enjoy yourself, do not fret or worry or take anything too seriously and forget entirely about engines. there are the downfall of many a future good sailor.take the book with you. and all you have to do is remember where the wind is from and adjust the sail accordingly. use the book as you begin to enjoy yourself and want to check on minor points of interest.have the greatest hour or so you will ever remember and remember that 'im up there gav4e you all you need - wind, water and the boat - not that which should be deposited in the deepest parts of the ocean - the engine.sailing lessons - forget the fancy schools almost entirely, find a good local old salt to take you out occasionally - you will learn more from him in an hour that a week at many of the sailing schools.jack.
