I live in Portsmouth, NH and own a 30' Powerboat. I have always loved the idea of sailing, but have never been. I have been thinking of trading my boat towards a sailboat, but first would like to try it out. If anybody knows of anyone thats gives sailing lessons in my area, or would like to train a mate please email me at SailunderStars@aol.com

Sailing Classes

About 10 years ago we were looking to take sailing lessons. We went to the Boston Sailing Center on Lewis Warf in Boston Harbor. They have various formats for 'Learn To Sail' course. We were quite pleased with the hands on instruction.

be careful of the 'main stream' qualification certifates that are carried out by many sailing schools. and be careful of many scools that will spin out your lessons unecessarily - could mention several very big names - but i believe that will cause something legal. if you have non-tidal water, rent or borrow a 15-20 foot gaff rig. with some knowlegde of wind from motorboating you will have some wiond sense. get a simple no more than 5 dollar booklet shewing the simple basics of sailing and points of sail - no more. study it for a couple of evenings, find a day when there is some wind but no more than, say 10-12 knots, and take the boat out. relax and enjoy yourself, do not fret or worry or take anything too seriously and forget entirely about engines. there are the downfall of many a future good sailor. take the book with you. and all you have to do is remember where the wind is from and adjust the sail accordingly. use the book as you begin to enjoy yourself and want to check on minor points of interest. have the greatest hour or so you will ever remember and remember that 'im up there gav4e you all you need - wind, water and the boat - not that which should be deposited in the deepest parts of the ocean - the engine. sailing lessons - forget the fancy schools almost entirely, find a good local old salt to take you out occasionally - you will learn more from him in an hour that a week at many of the sailing schools. jack.

I agree

My wife took two weekends of instruction ($400.00) from a certified school. For only $150.00 more they would have given her her bareboat certificate. Only one problem... she couldn'nt even back the boat out of the dock, had no idea of what direction the wind was coming from and was scared to death everytime I left her at the helm. We have since found a private instructor whom we were both comfortable with and she is doing great. Does man overboard drills by herself and can trim a pretty good sail. With your positive attitude and some careful choices you will do fine... Ron

thanks for confirming what i wrote in reply to the original. not to say that there not one or two good schools but found them here in the u.s. not endorsing any particular certification. glad you found a good 'ol salt for your wife. best way until you find her getting much better than yourself - have this problem meself so sending her of to england for tidal experience and a royal yachting association course - ocean yachtmaster and super racing catagory. actually quite looking forward to it as i will be spending more time on the cushions we have just had for the cabin! jack.

Get a Book, Have Fun

Check out the book "Sailing for Dummies" 29.95 at most book stores, read the book and take the boat out. If you decide to take sailing lessons find someone who will give private lessons. Example: While some sailing classes are 4-500 dollars for a 3 day class, a private instructor on your boat should not cost over 150 dollars per day. Everything they teach is in the first 50 pages of the book. As for certifications, they are all just a rip-off. You don't need them to charter, Most people I find that have a certification know how to get the sails down in heavy weather, but missed the point that the sails should have been reefed before the heavy weather was upon them. Most of all enjoy yourself... Fred
