A move to Charlotte NC may be our next port. What is the Lake Norman experience like and how happy would one be with a boat the size of a Catalina 27 ?

Glad to hear you will be moving to Charlotte! I ensure you that you will love it. I've been here myself for 10 years from Michigan and had a Hunter 30 on the lake for years. It is very common now for boats in the 30 - 37 and even 40' range. The lake is large enough to provide for long sailing opportunities, plenty of clubs and groups for racing, and many great coves for dropping the hook for the day. While the lake is not extremely wide, it is very long, so depending upon the wind you may tack more than you are used to, but the lake is well worth it. Feel free to email me if you have more questions (bill@simoninibuilders.com). Good luck!

Pamlico Sound and Neuse River

Sylvia, you have another option. A lot of sailors do the drive from Charlotte to the coast. I do the drive from Raleigh and it's probably a lot more driving than you do now. Sailing's great and there's a lot of salty little towns out there.
