In 2009 my wife and I are palning to move to Syracsue NY. I plan on putting a boat in Henderson harbor. Since I'll be single handing most of the time I'm looking for something 28 to 32 feet. I'd like some ideas on the boat I should buy. I figure the eastern end ogf the lake will get hairy on occasion since the winds (NW to SE) will push the waves across the lake. Here are my questions: 1. What type boat should I be looking for: Catalina? Seafarer? Island Packet? Bayfield? Watkins? Other??????????? 2. Does anyone have a name of a contact in the Henderson Harbor area that might provide me with information on the facilities there... slips, moorings, fees, sailing clubs, etc? 3. I'm trying to find brokers that sells sail boats along the Lake Ontario shoreline between Buffalo and Watertown, NY (or even down the St. Lawrence). I'd prefer not to have to transport over the hard or sail up to the St Lawrence Gulf and then up the river to the Lake. I've tried on line but without much success. Thanks for any help you can provide. Hayden

Loads of options

Hayden, Sailed Lake Ontario for more than 10 years on a Catalina 25, loved it and did both crew and singlehand sailing without problems. Last few years there, we moved up to a Catalina 30. Still can t be talked out of that model...great for cruisng lake Ontario under all conditions. Loads of brokers around the lake. You will find more volume and better deals on your side of the pond. Even with a low Canadian dollars, a few year ago, we were doing a lot better on the US for both choice and prices. In Buffalo you have RCR, who are good and have several branches around the Lake. In Rochester there's a few also. On the Canadian side their a great deal of them, from Swans in Pickering for Catalina, Angus yacht in TO for Hunters, Anchor Yachts Sales in Mississauga, Clift's marine, Pat Strugeon etc. they all have website with listing. We found a greater volume and better pricing on Lake Erie (Sandusky, Catawba island) and St-Clair Shores Michigan. The trucking cost to Toronto for a C30 was about 1500$. Or spend a few days sailing it back through the Welland Canal...quite the experience! Forget anything along the St-Lawrence river on the Quebec side down to the Gulf. Volume is slim and prices high...good only if you are selling! Wish happy sailing on Lake Ontario...don't forget to visit the thousand islands for a cruising, simply awesome. What's your budget?

How much do you want to spend? Do you like modern designs (look at Sailing) or classic, 70's designs (look at Good Old Boat). Feeling good when you see your boat _is_ important. Do you want to sail, or enjoy your time on the water at the dock? Do you want to race, cruise, or day sail? That will help us a lot on models to recommend. I'd add Hunter, Pearson, and C&C to your list, anyway. Why not buy "Lakeland Boating Ports O' Call - Lake Ontario." This is a port/cruising guide for Lake Ontario and the Thousand Islands. If you want to cruise, you'll definitely want this, or a similar book. And it has a good list of facilities at Port Henderson. We cruised the Thousand Islands last summer - awesome! And protected waters, interesting views, and many pretty anchorages make it a great place for someone who might be uncomfortable on the lake. David Lady Lillie

Try my website

I publish a website for Lake Ontario that has information on yacht clubs on the lake. Go to the "Yacht Clubs" link on the navigation bar and click on the map for the location you want. We have stayed at the Henderson Harbor Yacht Club and really enjoyed it. Very friendly people. The link to my site is below.

Thanks...

...for the "Lake Ontario Web-site". Now in my "Favourites". I gotta learn how to do the picture thing??? Thinking of doing the Trent to Ontario, to the Rideau, to Ottawa. Then uncertain whether to back-track, or continue down the Ottawa R. to the St. Lawrence, to L. Ontario, and home to Lock 32 at Bobcaygeon??? Travelling solo in my Gramp 23... Any experiences on that route, comments, suggestions?? Would feel more comfortable in a convoy. Any one interested?? Roger M.

You're In Luck - Sacket's Harbor

I presently am living in the Syracuse area and have my Catalina 28 at Navy Point Marine in Sacket's Harbor (a few miles up the road from Henderson Harbor). No problems and much fun sailing out of there over the last couple of years. Navy Point runs a used boat brokerage as well as a full-service marina. They also are are dealers for Catalina and Jenneau. Check them out and good luck! Mr_Lucky s/v Second Act 2005 Catalina 28 MK II Anniversary Edition

...I'm thinking?? Before school is out and the system gets busy. That could also get me to Ottawa, for Canada Day celebrations. The Rideau Canal runs thru the city centre directly beside the Parliament buildings. Also have a daughter living there... Could be nice travelling in tandem. I've done part of the Rideau to Ottawa several years ago. Great trip! From Philly to Lake Ontario? How you do that? Roger
