I’m considering a trip from Omaha area to Duluth Minnesota this spring to try my hand at sailing in a larger lake. This will be my second year sailing, so I don’t have a wealth of experience. Any suggestions or comments on the area would be greatly appreciated.

Info re your boat -your trip

I haven't been there myself but I understand the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior are beautiful.

How big?

Where are you sailing in the Omaha area, Maniwaw? We have a lot of lakes in Minnesota that are considerably larger! You don't have to go all the way to Superior and might be better off working your way up to big water. On your way up I35 you could stop in the Minneapolis area and spend some time sailing Lake Pepin, the St. Croix, Minnetonka or even Waconia, White Bear lake... Plenty of lakes up here! How much boat are you pulling around?

Sorry I didn't give enough information

I sail a 365 surface acre lake south of Omaha in a 1986 Hunter 23.5. I took “Miss Lisa” to Yankton SD and had a great time behind the dam on Lewis and Clark Lake. I’d like to eventually end up coastal sailings.

23.5 is big enough

Hi Bob, I sail a 98 240 so we basically have the same boat. You'll really enjoy the openness on the Great Lakes, we've taken our boat to Lake Erie and Lake Michigan over the past two summers. Like you we're on a small reservoir here at home. The sailable area on ours is right at 1000 acres, it's great to get away and head to some big water. It's nice on the big lakes to get her on a tack and maintain a course for two hours, instead of the back and forth tacking you run into on a small body of water. Ken

Guide, weather

A good guide like "The Superior Way" by Bonnie Dahl and a close eye on the weather should provide a good experience in late July and early August. It is pretty cold and foggy in the spring. The Apostle islands should put you in awe!!!

Leech Lake!

Hey Baker! I would have mentioned Leech lake to Bob the first time around but I was thinking of lakes on the way to Superior. Leech is an absolutely beautiful lake to sail on. When out in the middle you can't see the shore to the North or South. Awesome lake to sail on. And yes Joe, we have to plan a week or four on the water this summer. Here, there or Superior. If we sail Superior we'll have to step my H23, your 34 will be a bit more difficult to haul to the lake!
