Fellow Sailors:
You should know about an important new international nonprofit group
called "Sailing for the Sea" that assists researchers in ways that will
help protect the marine environments we love and sail through. I urge
you to visit their web site and consider helping out. Joining this group
costs nothing and does not commit you to anything. Visit them at
http://www.sailingforthesea.com
Following is a brief excerpt from their web site that explains how we
sailors can help.
Why "SAILING FOR THE SEA" and how?
You like the sea, it is the environment of your choice. Why else would
you have a boat? If you could, you would not mind helping researchers
understand marine environments and the species living in them, but what
can you do?
You have a boat. It is not important if it is big or small, motor or
sailing boat, new or old. The important thing is that it is seaworthy,
that you are a skilled skipper, and that you want to use some of your
spare time together with biologists and other interesting people. You
can take part in the registration of sightings of marine species, but
you also have the choice to be the researcher's skipper during their
research project.
Two examples of how you can help:
a) You can take part in registering sightings of certain marine species,
thus helping researchers with estimates about them. You would be sending
in reports of sightings by e-mail. It is an easy thing to do, but could
be really helpful.
b) You can sail with biologists, researchers, graduate students and
other interesting people taking part in research projects. Depending on
what boat you have, how much time you have at your disposal, and what
needs the researchers contacting us have, we will find a project that
fits your profile as a skipper.
