Unless you day sail, many of us that enjoy fresh food, go looking for it when we're on the water.

Here's one of our favorite local farm stores on Penobscot Bay. The coast of Maine is arid. It was once lined with salt water farms that must have struggled. Turner Farm is a new age farm utilizing modern technology to grow food for North Haven Island. We try to anchor if we're sailing by when they're open.

The barn houses events as well as the farm store in season. You will find a surprising selection of organic vegetables and local meats, fish cheeses and craft foods. It's affordable.

Greenhouses extend the growing season creating more of a rainforest environment for the plants.

We love to cook at home and on the boat. Fresh local Maine artichokes aren't something you found in the past.

Know a good grocery store you can sail to?

Every time I see post and beam construction I wonder which came first, building construction or ship building. There was a time when the skills were interchangeable. I can build you a home, or a ship.

We used to have an A&P Market on the New river with public docks abutting their back parking lot here in Fort Lauderdale. It was right next to Fort Lauderdale's original Indian trading post. When A&P went out, it changed hands several times, and then was torn down to build high rise condos. the waterfront real estate in downtown was too valuable for a grocery store.

The Stranahan House was built in 1901 by Frank Stranahan, credited as Fort Lauderdale’s founding father, and his wife Ivy Cromartie Stranahan, the area’s first school teacher. It is the oldest surviving structure in Broward County and has served as a trading post, post office, town hall, and home to the Stranahans.

Good post, Tom. Here are a few fresh markets I can name (no particular order) within a short walking distance of a dinghy dock:

Farmers markets (seasonal outdoor):
Greenwich CT: Saturday mornings 9-1 in the rail commuter parking lot, adjacent to Greenwich Harbor (Downtown)
Port Jefferson NY: Sundays 9-1 accross the street from the Bridgeport ferry dock
Milford, CT: Saturday mornings 9-1 in the Milford town green
Stonington, CT: Saturday mornings 9-12 in the park adjacent to the commercial fishing piers
Block Island, RI: Each Saturday 9 a.m.- 11:30 a.m. at Negus Park on Ocean Ave. Every Wednesday 9 a.m.- 11:30 a.m. at the Manisses parking lot

Downtown grocery markets that have a wide selection of organic foods in a short walking distance of docks, no taxi needed (sorry I can't name them in each town without doing web searches):
Sag Harbor. NY
Greenport, NY
Oyster Bay, NY
Mamaroneck, NY (contact harbormaster about free tie-up at town dock)
Port Chester, NY (Costco is right on the river, and a Super Stop & Shop is adjacent to it)
Old Lyme , CT (stop at Old Lyme Marina, second marina on the east side of the CT River above the railroad bridge, and ask inside for walking directions to shopping center. About a 10 minute walk on residential streets.)
Wickford, RI
East Greenwich, RI
Jamestown, RI

I can also think of a few fish markets where the commercial boats unload, but you can usually spot those from the water.

That's all for now.

I’d add Mattituck to the list above. Also a fish monger worth mentioning is in Menemsha, in Martha’s Vineyard... not only is the catch fresh caught- they will also cook your seafood and have a very good chowder too, so you can take it out and walk less than 50 yards to the beach for a picnic. If you’ve been there you know the Harbor is very small (with tricky current) but it’s easy to get in and out in your dinghy. The holding is excellent outside off the beach, and Menemsha Bight is a good anchorage so long as the winds have a southerly flow (but it’s exposed to the N and you don’t want to be there in any wind direction that has an N in it).
