Just pondering a sail and a couple of months in Ensenada next spring. However, I can't seem to find any info on sailing destinations in the area. Did any of you who had your boats there explore, or is the coast south of it devoid of coves and anchorages like SoCal? Rick D.

turtle bay

Last year I trailered my Macgregor to San Diego and sailed down the coast of Mexico for three weeks. We cleared customs at ensenada, which was an all day process and played tourist. There are several ports and anchorages along the way and bahia tortuga or turtle bas is a little more than 200 miles south of Ensenada. Do you have the charts, etc.? there are several cruising guides and resources I found in the San diego area before we left. If you want some sepefics let me know. Thanks, Gary

I was thinking closer than Turtle Bay. My wife doesn't tolerate overnight sails well. I have charts on the boat but the guide I have didn't list anything very local to Ensenada. I'll pick up another this weekend. Sounds like you had a good trip. Rick D.

Baja sailing spots

One of the places we liked while in Ensenada that is within one easy day of sailing is Puerto Santo Thomas. It has a somewhat protected anchorage in a large cove and a cantina in the fishing village. Another nice sail south but much farther is Colonet or the Isle San Martin. both of these can be reached from Puerto Santo Thomas on the second day with very little or no night sailing during the summer. but you will be required to do the "Baja Bash" back to Ensenada.

Turtle Bay Range From Ensenada

Gary, Better re-check your charts. I have passed through there a few times, I was treated at the Turtle Bay hospital for a broken rib this past summer. I make it 278.5 nm from the Cabo Punta Banda, Fl (2) WR 9s, Light, to just outside the Fl (4) 16s light off Turtle bay. That's almost how 'the crow flys' cutting thru Cedros Island on a sharp tangent, and it leaves you a good six nm out from Ensenada. It takes a pretty able sailor to sail those waters in a Macgregor, especially going north. Longview is a good town, my friend, Bill Harman grew up there, do you know him off chance? He was living in Hawaii on the last word from a mutual friend. You can also enter the port at the south east tip of Cedros (not the shipping port) a fishermans harbor for fuel, I did last trip and the folks were friendly there, including the Port Captain.
