thinking about pulling boat to Chicago to sail/walk round the city. From what I have read it is hard to get a marina slip...just wondering if the sailing is good, any good anchorages near the city and/or within an easy day .sail (say within 20 miles). Any additional info./advice appreciated. Thanks.

if you are a member of a yacht club look into reciprocity. i think columbia has a big dock and chicago yacht club may have its own slips. not sure but call them. the city runs the harbors here is their web site;

if you want to walk around the city, monroe (mooring balls only) or dusable (slips only) will be your best bet to be in the center. i have never seen anyone anchor over night, not sure if its allowed.

they have a fire works show every wednesday and saturday at navy pier that is better than most towns yearly show. also if you come on wednesday you can race around the cans. check columbia yacht club site for the beer can race info.

see ya soon

thanks mike! I'm off for the summer with no computer at home so not checking up very often. Not a member of a yacht club....sooo, reads like there is not many, if any, options to overnight near the city. racing around the cans sounds good! I'll check the sites...

If all you want to do is sail, get a transient slip at North Point Marina. At $30/night with power and absolutely first class facilities, you can't beat it. Free to launch by the way. Plenty of room for make ready too. It would be an all day sail/motor to make Chicago from there depending on wind/seastate). Check into transient availability with the harbor masters. North Point has a fantastic beach just a short walk from the marina. Sleeping on the hook in the flats for me is next to impossible(unless anesthetized)....wouldn't recommend it.

John

You putting the right inflection on that "Chigago"?:)

Actually, it's usually pretty easy to get transient slips in the Chicago area (except during the 4th, the air show or Venetian Night). Belmont Harbor appears to have a lot of open slips this year, particularly on the star docks, so you might check there. 312-742-7673. Belmont is just north of downtown, and an easy walk to some of the nicest beaches and liveliest neighborhoods in the city. We winter at Winthrop Harbor (Northpoint Marina); it's a long haul down to the city -- roughly 40 miles -- and there's not much to see up there (although I agree that the harbor is nice). There's a nice little pocket-sized harbor in Wilmette, and transient space is $30/night, but it might be hard to find a transient spot for anything over 25'.

Slips may be hard to get 3rd week of August. The Tall Ships will be at the Navy Pier. We age going up from Houston to see them.
