I am thinking of buying a 1978 O'Day 23 and would appreciate any thoughts about how capable, dry, tender etc. the boat is in up to 25 knots and 2-3 foot seas. I have heard that it is quite tender and I don't want to frighten my wife! Also about the encapsulated keel: does that mean it is encased by the fiberglass hull? I am also looking at a Tanzer 22 and would appreciate a comparison if anyone can make one. Thanks for any help!

Oday 23

I have had my '78 23 in those conditions and had no problems. She is tender, but just about any boat that berths 8' and only 23' in length will be, and she likes to round up in a strong gust. The truth is my boat spent most of it's time on the gulf coast. I don't know how the boat you are looking at is set up, but if the main has the jiffy reefing system and you have a rolling furler you shouldn't have any problems. The cockpit stays relatively dry except for spray from the bow when the seas are up and the wind is strong. I can't say anything too negative about the boat at all. I'm sorry that I can't compare it to a Tanzer. The keel is covered in a layer of fiberglass. I don't know if I have answered your question or not, I will say I have confidence in the boat. God Bless, and good luck. Brian
