Belize Sailing

Paul, I did not know Mooring had a base there. Great ! I am envious. You will enjoy Belize. Great scuba diving if you do that. Hopefully you will give us a report when you return. How are you getting to Placencia? Charter plane? I spent a couple of weeks in Belize a few years ago and really enjoyed it. Had an enjoyable daysail out of San Pedro. The captain and his lady friend were nice and the boat was a wooden traditional fishing boat. It had no compass, no radio, no charts! But we did fly a spinnaker on the return to San Pedro. Placencia is very remote, not much there. I drove down Hummingbird Highway as the coastal road the water was too deep and then drove down the long peninsula to Placencia, I needed 4 wheel drive as the road was muddy in places. I remember the road crosses the little airport runway near Placencia and you have to stop and look for oncoming planes! Nice people in Placencia. Walked along portions of beach that were very remote. Unfortunately in the remote areas a lot of trash from across the Caribbean washes up on the beach due to the previaling winds. The beaches are clean in front of the resorts. As Paul said, I wish I was there now. Thanks for reviving my memories.

Watch the coral!

I rented a Hobbie 16 in San Pedro and sailed from the Mexico border to Cay Cocker. The water was so clear I could not tell how deep it was. Once I got into a box area about 25'x 25', and had to turn around to get out. Not easy on a Hobbie Cat without a motor, but I made it. Inside the reef there were almost no waves, and the wind was east at 9, couldn't ask for better sailing conditions. Have now been to Belize three times, and want to go back again.
