"Sailing" at anchor

Just wondering if the slight side to side tugging on a fluke style anchor, while the boat is swinging back and forth, would tend to work the anchor out of the bottom, or in deeper.

My guess is . . .

that it would dig in deeper. That is assuming the wind speed is under 10 knots. If the wind gets higher, the sailing gets more pronounced and might loosen the anchor's hold. The amount and weight of chain you have will also affect the hold.

it would seem to relate to rode length. "Triangularly speaking," a longer rode would make a shorter change in angle of modification from swing to swing, port to starboard, left to right. Could be be you might swing even more. You may want to consider an idea from Lin & Larry (who else?). From Self Sufficient Sailor: tie a bridle from about ten feet out from your bow along the rode with a running hitch, and bring that line back to amidships or further aft, like to a winch. It angles the boat to one side only and reduces swing. We've tried it and it works, especially in heavy air. Stu
