I'm helping a friend bring a 33 O/I across the Gulf from St. Pete to Pensacola in about 3 weeks. I've sailed this before and came directly across, does anyone have any recomnendations on another route? Also anyone know of a web site for long range marine weather forcast? D. Carl s/v Dragon

Another Route

Follow the Intercoastal Waterway north as far as you can, jumping out into the gulf north of Tampa-sail to Carabelle, Florida and pick up the IC again if mast height permits (less than 50'). If height is a problem, after Carabelle jump on the outside and sail to Destin for a rest (no bridge to navigate under when seeking safe harbor and then on to Pensacola. Caution-the passes at Governor's Cut, Destin, and Pensacola can be ugly with falling tides and strong southerly winds. Good Luck.

Nice N Easy

Straight Across

I made this trip last year, the other direction, and did it just a little different. From Pennsacola I went across to Pt. Saint Joe, and from there to St.Pete. It's a pretty easy trip this way, never too far from a safe harbor, and no really long distance offshore. It's about a hundred miles from Pt. Saint Joe to Pennsacola, and about 200 from St.Pete to Pt.Saint Joe. If you follow the coast be careful, plenty of shallow water in that area. Just watch for a couple of days with some south in the winds and go for it.
