Just visited Block Island, RI arriving last Sunday August 17. Had an exciting sail over from Watch Hill, close hauled with 20-22kn apparent from East and 4-5 ft seas. Anchored in New Harbor, and heard talk that evening of a 35 ft sloop that foundered on the lee shore of Town Beach earlier Sunday. Sure enough, our trip to the beach revealed the sad truth... the boat was awash to the cabin top maybe some 20 yards from shore, held upright by a kedge from the masthead. She was still fully rigged on Monday, but by Tuesday, sails and boom were salavaged (or scavenged!). We left before we could get the scoop on what happened, but the boat was still underwater when we left the island. I must admit it was somewhat disturbing to see a boat in that condition, and I couldn't help but wonder about the safety of the crew. Does anyone have any info on the accident? Was the crew able to make it safely to shore? Is there any hope of salvaging what's left of the boat? Larry Sail-La-Vie

The latest on-line edition of the Block Island Times is dated the day before the incident. Check it out in a few days; perhaps there will be some coverage.
