Rig measurements

These refer to some critical measurements for your rig/sails. In approximate terms: P is the mainsail hoist (height) from the tack to the head of the sail (or boom to max hoist point on the mast). E is the mainsail foot dimension from the tack to the clew (translate as effective boom length). J is the distance from the tack of the jib to the mast (on deck measurement). I is the length of the luff of the jib (forestay). You will also see the term LP used to describe a foresail. This is the perpendicular distance of the clew of the jib to the luff, expressed as a percentage of J. When you see a "130 genoa" it means that the LP distance is 130 percent of J. Derek

Am I wrong?

I was just looking at a web site that had "I" as the height of the head of the jib above the deck. As far as I know, the definition in my previous post as being the forestay/luff dimension is correct. Am I wrong (after all these years)??? Derek ps. If I am incorrect it will the first time I have ever made a mistake :)

So I'm not perfect after all (sigh)....

... please don't tell Marge! I stand corrected. Oh well, three out of four ain't bad. The link below gives the PHRF definitions in a pdf document. Derek

Sailboat specs

Go to the archives, look for sailboat specs. A while back I put a diagram showing where these measurements are taken.
