is there any reason i couldn't put a sail in one of those "industrial size" washers at a laundry-mat on a gentle cycle with maybe some "Woolite". (don't think drying it there is a good idea but i could "hang it out" to dry at home. its my old main from an h23 so it should not be too big and i would put it on a gentle cycle. i have a new main but would like to put the old main to spare....(after a patch or 2), and sure hate to pay sailcare to do it. william

I regret machine washing

as you are considering. It caused what could be best described as "stretch marks" along the threads in the fabric that I just knew could blow out. I made repairs, but this old h23 sail is going to have to be replaced.

well, i had nothing much too loose....

....so i tried it anyway. (nothing ventured nothing gained :) ). this was i'm sure the oem 1986 neil pride main that came with my boat. i put it in one of those 8 load commercial washers on cold/gentle with some woolite....hanks and all. outside of the fact that it is allot cleaner i can't see as its any worse for wear....and it already showed plenty wear! it wasn't crisp to begin with but i don't see as its any worse now. its a spare anyway. now i have to get my "Don Casey" sail repair book out and patch a tear that was aready there....(and had duct tape on it!) i'll patch it, check it, bag it, and at least know that if i ever need it that it is servicable to get me to a harbour....

Laundrymat Blues

I got kicked out the the laundrymat for doing this! They didn't like the sound of the slugs banging in their washer! Although it did clean it, I dont think it was good on the material. It was an old sail anyway!
