Is there supposed to be a relationship between the boat serial number (stamped on the hull) and the sail number (indicated on main sail)? The number on my sail does not appear to match the serial number, perhaps the PO changed the sail.

Can't say from my angle. My sail just has "M 25" on it, with nothing else. My hull ID is standard format.

Number Number, Who's Got the #

Most if not all builders will put the hull # (aka the "one design" number) on the main and any overlapping sails. This makes boat identifyable for local club racing. If in distress, it will greatly help the SAR folks more quickly ID you if there are other sail boats in the vicinity (well, besides you shooting up flares!).

So, if the hull number, from your HIN code on the transom, is, say 1238, you would have hull #1238 that was molded out for that model.
Unless the mfgr was really cheap, they would always put that individual hull # on your sails. Sometimes the first buyer is saving every possible nickel and opts to have blank sails.

If you, being a later owner, want more info on your exact hull #, you could just contact MacGragor and give them the HIN on the hull and verify that number. Lucky you! Your builder is still in business!

When I registered my boat with the YRA and needed a sail number they gave me the first two digits that indicated the region I am in. Then they said I could pick any other numbers to follow. They suggested I use my hull number and would check to see if that number was still availabe. It was and my sail has 28798 on it.

Usually a sail number is added when the owner decides he wants to participate in organized racing, where a number is a requirement. It doesn't have to be related to anything; it's just something that the people on the committee boat at the finish line use to identify the boat. The number has to be on all primary sails - jib, main and spinnaker - and has to be the same on all of them.

If it helps my V25 sail and hull don't match and my understanding is they are original. Sail is still in pretty good shape considering it was manufactured in 1976. I have had to the loft twice in my 6 year of ownership.

agree with fastolsen.

but you can change it... just needs to be unique with others in your class.

often in 'club' one designs they peal off all but the last 2 or 3 digits...

ie., a hobie 16 is like 6 figures now... (I had a 13xx)

I am buying a new mainsail. How can I determine from the HIN # if I should put the Venture or Macgregor logo on it. My current sail has the V25 logo.

I have no reason to believe my sails are not original to my boat (76 V25), and my sail number (781) has no correlation to my HID in any way (s/n 0840).

My Sail is V25 #965. My Serial number appears to be 0908 ('76). Seems to be quite close to yours, Phyrexii! The differences that I can determine between Macgregor and Venture of that vintage is that the galley is in the center on the port side (for Venture) and is next to the companionway (for Macgregor). I also found some material on the internet (sailboatdata.com) that suggests that the Venture ballast is 800# versus 625# for the Macgregor. Both boats have a displacment of 2100#.

If the cabin layout differences are correct then mine is indeed a V25.

Fred, my understanding (which *may* be flawed ;-), was that there were no "Macgregor 25's" in 1976 - they were all "Ventures". On my boat, if memory serves me, it says "Venture" on the hull (on the transom? It may say "Venture, by Macgregor", but I can't remember... hmmm...). I think the only indication on the hull that it was made by Macgregor is in the HID. I always thought that the V25 became the M25 (with the interior changes you mentioned) in 1978 (?). I had also seen the 800# keel listed, too, but almost every source lists it as 625# so I presume the 800# to be a fallacy. But, I've never actually weighed my keel (or boat), so I can't really confirm or deny...

This is the best picture I have of the logo on the starbord side towards the stern. (I, apparently, have the very rare "Ven Ure" model )
