We are leaving the end of this month for a 10 day trip and Marion wanted to go north in the Gulf Island and I wanted to go South in the San Juan's. So we split the difference and decided to sail to Port Renfrew and depart the next day up the west coast of Vancouver Island to Bamfield/Tofina area. Has anyone done this trip and give some advice? Very different cruising

Hi Cliff - Having sailed in all the areas you've mentioned, you should consider how adventurous you want to be vs. how relaxing a vacation you want. In general, I feel the cruising in the Gulf Island and the San Juans is similar, although there are typically more crowds south of the border. There are a myriad of places to choose from in either archipeligo, from quiet anchorages to resorts and bustling towns. Heading out the Strait of Juan de Fuca to Barkley can be a significant task, depending on the weather. It's a long run from Victoria or Sooke to Bamfield, but it can be done in one long day if conditions are favorable. Stopping in Port San Juan (Port Renfrew) is the only shelter available enroute, but it can be a somewhat uncomfortable anchorage with swells entering the bay - I try to avoid making a stop. The other consideration is August is often referred to as "Foggust" on the west coast of Vancouver Island, so I'd recommend having radar if you plan on being out there during this time. That being said, I've cruised Barkley and Clayoquot Sounds a 1/2 dozen times and prefer the west coast to the inside passage. You won't find nearly as many Bayliners out there and it's absolutely beautiful and wild. Really a worthwhile trip if you have the time and inclination, but this route does require more vigilant weather planning. In any case, I'm sure you'll have a great time! Trevor

Leave a weather window

Comfortable cruising days are the exception on that side of the island & there are no/few places to "duck into". include several "buffer days" so you can take advantage of favorable conditions when you travel to/from that area... It's beautiful there!

Much like sailing off the coast of Oregon

A friend of a friend is powering a yacht from California to Vancouver for delivery here in British Columbia. He is looking forward to his working cruise until he hits the open water along the Oregon coast. He knows he will probably hit long high rolling swells with a massive fog bank to boot. I get sea sick, but it has to be nasty out for me to get sick. The last time I was sea sick was off the coast of Oregon. We live in sailing paradise here in BC, Washington and Alaska. People think if it is so much fun to sail here, it must be even more fun to sail else where. This just ain't so for many areas of the planet and one of them being off the coast of Oregon. The West side of Vancouver Island gets dramatic seas that can become unpleasant to sail on, just like Oregon. There are many ship wrecks at the bottom off our further most coast as testimony to this statement. If you want some great sailing in relative isolation, head north of Desolation Sound; most of the sailing and power population stop there and go no further up. Just remember that currents can get interesting the further north you go.
