I am planning a number of improvements to the sail trim systems on my familys O'Day 28 that will make the sails adjustable under load.

-Improve mid-boom traveler system with a continuously adjustable traveler (rather than stoppers)

-Add a block and tackle system to jib leads for easy adjustment under load

-Add a simply backstay adjuster to the split backstay for quick mast bend inducement

The goal with these improvements is to make the boat easy to sail and trim for optimal performance while cruising and the occasional casual race. We are also adding spinnaker gear and have already purchased the sail and the pole.

Has anyone else made such improvements to their OD 27, 28, 30, or 31?

Always liked the Oday 28. You'll get big bang for your buck on items 1 and 2.

But because your rig is masthead, adding backstay tension does not bend your mast, like it would of a fractional rig. It simply adds forestay tension and controls forestay sag; a useful adjustment in it own right.

On racy masthead rigs, a babystay is used to induce and control mast bend. But that also requires inline lower shrouds, which the 28 does not have.

The adjustable traveler was a great improvement. Well worth the money.

A system for easily adjusting the jib leads are high on my wish list.

Although the back stay adjuster would be nice it's not that high on my list. It's a pretty stiff stick on the 31.

Thanks for the observations on the frac vs masthead rig its spot on and makes sense. I had a feeling a backstay adjuster wasn't gonna work but couldn't quite put my finger on the reason why. I have a lot of experience racing small keelboats (j24s j22s, shields, etc.) and of course those are frac rigs and adjusters are effective.

I think if I want to induce mast bend with the current geometry I would have to ease forestay, tighten backstay, tighten the forward lowers, tighten cap shrouds, and snug aft lowers. Lots of fuss...

That's exactly what you would do.

Yes, lots of fuss.

I have a harken traveler on top of the salon now. That permits me to have a full Bimini and dodger and uninstructed access to the cabin. The po has and adjuster on the split back stay but I never use it. I have two lewmar 16 self tailing winches on top of the salon and two barycenter 26 two speed self tailing winches on each side of the cockpit. I replaced all the deck organizers with triple garhaur. Deck organizers and the lines turn st about 45 degrees from the mast. Everything works pretty well. Probably the best thing I did was replace the masthead sheaves and pins

I would love to see photos of your setup. We are planning to sail as is for this year, but I'm aiming for a setup just like yours by the sound of it. (You get about 2 months more sailing if you've got a dodger on Lake Michigan) Does the hatch cover slide beneath the traveler atop the salon?
