When I lived in So Ca I conducted many sail trim seminars, 2 or 3 of which were under the auspices of MARINA SAILING. I've had numerous requests for these seminars but living in Tucson doesn't make it easy to get to the waters edge. MARINA SAILING is a large So Ca charter company with 5 or 6 offices from Ventura to San Diego and they have decide to pick up my torch and conduct both a SAIL TRIM SEMINAR and a ON THE WATER SEMINAR. The best part is the 'on the water" seminar. That is where you put into practice the techniques you learned in class. The class room portion is required before you can take the "on the water" seminar.

The 3 hour class room seminar will move you from beginner to high intermediate. Even if you consider yourself an expert I guarantee you will learn things you did not know. The "on the water" seminar is the frosting on the cake. It is limited to 6 people so you get individual attention. You experience every position on the boat (helm, trimmers, ect) for every point of sail. How it works is you take the boat from dead stop to full speed. After reaching full speed, the boat is stopped and all sail trim controls are messed up and crew positions are changed. Then it is off you go again. After everyone has experienced closehauled you do the same thing for the other points of sail. During the seminar any sail trim adjustments have to be proceeded with the reason you are making a sail trim adjustment. In other words, you have to have a reason for what you are doing.

The first half hour is like a Chinese fire drill but on the sail home to the dock I'll match their sail trim against any boat in the harbor. These sailor get so good at sail trim that they can look at other boats in the harbor and tell me what is wrong with their sail trim and what sail trim adjustments they would make to correct the situation.

If you are a So Ca sailor and think you might be interested in these seminars please call Leslie Acord at Marina Sailing in Newport Beach, Ca. (949) 548-8900.
