i've seen discussions of lubing the sail track but don't remember on how long the lube lasts or which kind to use. any advice?

...is my choice. Comes in a variety of sizes in a spray can. How long it lasts would seem dependent on how much or often you use it, and the conditions where you keep your boat. In my case, I spritz the sail tracks about once every 3 months or so. This is a good product, IMHO, as it works and doesn't seem to attract dirt.

When the sail is down I spray a liberal amount...

on the slugs. It seems to spread the lubricant along the track each time you raise and lower main. An overkill alternative would be to have someone hoist you up the stick, spraying as you go, or drop the mast. Some time ago Sail magazine had a tip that made sense. Tie a wad of cloth the size that will fit snuggly into the track. Soak the rag with this lubricant and use the halyard to pull it to the top with another small line to bring it back down. Terry

lube the track all the way up

anything that will absorb water, e.g., rag, small piece of sponge, etc..., attached to the halyard and a downhaul, soaked with lube will work. If you have an old slide or car on which you attach the material and which fits into the slot, it makes life alot easier. I normally soak a sponge and run it up/down the slot with the headcar a few times. Don't forget the masthead sheaves which is another story...

What Warren said

McLube, That’s good stuff. Being ol’ fashioned, I pull the mast every fall and give it a good coat before I put it up again in the spring. About halfway through the season, I use a variation of the rag trick to give it a little tune up. Ferg

It attracts much less dirt and grime than silicone, WD-40 or traditional lubes and does not seem to make everything a mess. They call it a dry lube meaning it goes on wet but the carriers quickly evaporate leaving only the secret lubricating agents behind without the mess. Yes it's expensive but it works and it lasts for a long time. I've had the same bottle of McLube SailKote for five years now...

gets my vote too. WD-40 isn't really a lubricant, although most of use use it as one sometimes!

I have a Catalina 30 with full battens. I use Mclube in the spring and I am able to haul the main all the way to the top with no winch. ( and I am just a skinny old man;-) Only use the winch to tension the halyard. (I have conventional sail slugs, no batcars) Lasts all summer. Fair winds Dave
